Tesco Extra

I had the unfortunate experience of visiting Tesco Extra last weekend when I was back at my folks’. This was in Seremban.

I usually do not shop in Tesco since there are none near my place but I went on Saturday because they were running some good deals on diapers and Milo.

This particular outlet they have in Seremban is actually a take over from the previous Makro. Apparently Tesco had done some refurbishment of Makro and this new concept will combine the best practices of both Tesco and Makro.

I do not really know what that exactly means since the internal layout is no different from what Makro used to be – big, cold, dusty, stale fresh produce (the fish already had “sinking” eyes), rude staff and unorganized shelves.

There was the security guard at the exit who loudly gestured to me to stop taking photos. I replied saying that there was no signage to say that taking photos was not allowed and he went on to be louder and began to talk rudely to me. He said that there was a sign at the entrance to say that is not allowed, but after checking it twice, I still could not find it! Obviously it did not exist.

Then there were these workers at the vegetable section who were pushing around. I did not even dare venture too near the fish and meat sections, the smell was enough to put me away.

While it is true that Tesco did make provisions for disabled parking and toilets, parent & baby parking, etc, I do not think that there is a personnel there on stand by to enusre that these facilities are not abused. So what is the point of shouting about having it, but not implemented?

At the end of the visit, I (again) promise myself I would not go there, no matter how cheap their diapers are. I certainly do not want to risk getting myself run down by the many kids there with a shopping trolley, subject myself to rude staff and paying for some claimed fresh produce.

Buck up Tesco, you are, after all, seen to be a British brand, start functioning like one!
